Materials used

Pictures of birds: http://www.16xx8.com/photoshop/sucai/2016/c659437.html

The steps are as follows:

1. Process the background

Join the Desert

Create a new canvas (2300X1400px, 72dpi), open the desert material, cut out the desert part, drag it to the new canvas, and adjust it to the appropriate size.

Join Sky

Drag the sky material with mountains into the picture, place it under the desert layer, adjust it to the appropriate size and position, and create a new “Brightness/Contrast” (brightness value: -25) channel to darken the sky a little. Place a “Curve Channel” above the desert layer to darken the desert, and place a “Hue/Saturation” (saturation value: -26) to reduce the saturation of the desert color.

Bring the sky with clouds into the picture, place it below the desert layer, and adjust it to a suitable size. Add a “Layer Mask” to expose the peaks of the sky layer below, and lower the layer’s opacity to 75%. Create a new layer below the desert layer, and use the “soft light brush with color value d5b59e, opacity 38%, and flow 100%” to paint the junction between the desert and the sky to blur the distant mountains. Create a new layer above the desert layer, use “d5b59e soft light brush with color value, opacity 38%, flow 100%” to paint the junction of the desert and the sky, and change the layer blending mode to soft light.

2. Join a city

Add the city on the left side of the desert

Delete the sky from the city material looking straight up, drag the city into the picture, and move it to the desert on the left. Inserting a “color scale” channel enhances the contrast between light and dark in the city.

Add the city on the right side of the desert

Delete the sky from the city material looking up, drag the city into the picture, and move it to the desert on the right. Use an eraser to erase the excess, leaving only the building. Create a new layer above the desert layer and use a “Black Soft Light Brush, Opacity 38%, Flow 50%” to add shadows to the stairs. Place the “Hue/Saturation” channel (Saturation value -42) to reduce its saturation, and then use the “Burn and Dodge” tools on the city layer to emphasize the light and dark relationship of the stairs themselves.

Virtual City

Create a new layer on each side of the city, use “b9a082 Soft Light Brush, Opacity 66%, Flow 58%” to paint the lower part of the city, and change the layer blending mode to Soft Light.

3. Add cities and people

Join the ship

Drag the cutout into the screen and move it to the desert. Create a new layer below and use the “Black Soft Light Brush, Opacity 17%, Flow 86%” to paint the shadow of the ship.

Join people

Cut out the person from the character material, drag it into the picture, place it on the boat, and erase the character’s feet. Place a neutral gray layer above the character layer (the layer mode is Overlay) and use the “Dodge” tool to brighten the bright parts of the character and increase the contrast between light and dark on the character itself.

www.16xx8.com_0354531310-8.jpg

Place a new layer above the character layer, use a “white soft light brush, opacity value 100%, flow value 100%” to brighten the light-receiving surface of the character, and change the layer opacity to 18%.

The track of the added ship

Use the lasso tool to circle a part of the desert, then deform it to fit the bottom of the ship, copy one layer to form a short track, then copy this short track one layer and move it back, then use an eraser to erase the intersection to make the track more realistic.

Blur the city again

Create a new layer, use the “color value e6d0bd soft light brush, opacity value 73%, flow value 100%” to paint the cities on both sides, and change the layer opacity to 55%.

www.16xx8.com_0354535C8-11.jpg

Join the flock

Drag the two bird flock materials into the picture respectively, place them in the air, and reduce the layer opacity.

www.16xx8.com_0354534M5-12.jpg

4. Adjust the overall atmosphere

Add light

Create a new layer on the top of the layer, use a soft brush with a color value of cfb490, an opacity value of 100%, and a flow value of 100%. Click on it, zoom in, change the layer blending mode to Screen, and change the opacity to 30%.

www.16xx8.com_035453IC-13.jpg

Add texture

Drag the texture material into the picture and change the layer blending mode to Soft Light. Place the “Hue/Saturation” channel (check Colorize, value is 9/23/-22). Change the opacity of the texture layer to 82%.

www.16xx8.com_035453JK-14.jpg

Darken the four corners

Create a new “Gradient” channel on the top layer (black-transparent, radial gradient, 90 degrees, scale 539%, reverse tick), and the layer opacity should be 58%).

www.16xx8.com_035453Ab-15.jpg

Color grading

Create a new “Curves” channel to adjust the light and dark contrast of the color.

www.16xx8.com_0354534333-16.jpg

Create a new “Color Balance” channel to adjust the colors of highlights, shadows, and midtones.

www.16xx8.com_0354535E4-17.jpg

Sharpen

Stamp a layer, change the layer blending mode to Linear Light, use the “High Contrast Preservation” tool to sharpen the image, and you’re done.
