PS: ImagineFX is a global digital art magazine.

A few points need to be reminded here:

(1) In the process of illustration, you need to pay attention to careful inspection after each step is completed so that problems can be discovered early. Because when problems arise later, the corresponding adjustments will be more difficult.

(2) When people see an illustration, they will first notice the face design of the character in the illustration. This is the key to the success of the illustration design, so you need to focus on designing the character’s face well. Although this is a science fiction illustration, the costumes do not need to be particularly technological, because the key is the hoverboard!

(3) Sometimes when we use colors, we choose one or two saturated colors. But in this illustration, more saturated colors will be used to convey a bright, cheerful mood. Although this color arrangement may limit the expression space of the illustration, as an illustration that is going to be on the cover of ImagineFX, you have to believe that the art editor of ImagineFX can handle its contrast and saturation well:)

(4) Before starting to draw, you need to ensure that the illustration creation starts from the overall scene to avoid getting caught up in the details prematurely. In fact, excellent details can take the illustration to a higher level, but if the illustration is considered as a whole, reasonable and rich color combinations need to be used to support the outline and enrich the picture.

1. Preliminary conceptual design

The theme of this PS tutorial is to draw a sports Girl with a cheerful personality who likes to be active in the streets. After determining the theme, draw a sketch of the illustration to roughly determine the overall composition, roughly color the characters, and use an orange pattern as the background.

2. Strengthen key points

After the composition has been roughly set, start carving out the details. Every detail needs to be carefully drawn, especially when you are ready to move to the next detail, you should consider whether what you just did is good enough. In addition, an eye-catching character portrayal requires color matching and visual creativity to create an explosive point. Therefore, as shown in the picture below, the illustration of the character meets the viewer’s gaze, making it easy for people to be quickly attracted to the picture.

3. Adjust character proportions

As the details are further refined, you need to consider whether the proportions of the main illustration characters are normal. The best way to adjust proportions in Photoshop is with the Lasso Tool + Transform Tool. Here’s a tip: selecting a small area to adjust will be more effective and easier to control than selecting a large area.

4. Design scene materials

Considering that the character loves street sports, the character’s top is designed to be a leather jacket, which forms a good material contrast with the plastic on the shoulders and the rubber on the shoes. When there is no suitable painting material to use directly, it is very interesting to put two very different materials (matte and reflective) together.

Figure 04

5. Clothing functional design

In terms of sports equipment, the bottoms of the shoes are designed with spikes to enhance grip and the pants are designed with knee pads. These equipment will make people feel skateboarding very comfortable and form a good contrast with the leather jacket on the upper body.

Knee pads, gloves, and goggles represent the character’s professionalism and skill in sports, and they are all red, allowing people to focus on the character’s face, but don’t overdo it.

6. Tattoo design

The characters have tattoos on their hands, symbolizing street culture, and the tattoo patterns are geometric patterns, representing that the future science fiction world will be based on technology. The red mark on the forehead represents the spiritual form in the character’s heart and the universality of this form in future society.

7. Add background color

Background is a must for illustrationsIt should be composed and contrast with the foreground objects. Here the most saturated colors for the characters are chosen and integrated into the background. Combining red and blue, tempered by the black of the leather and the gray of the pants, then adding some fun color.

8. Polish character details

Continue to improve the facial painting, adjust the details and proportions of the facial area, and adjust the character’s gaze to look forward, as if to see how far it can go. The hair effect is a bit unnatural. Here imagine the weight of the hair, and then design it to match the flowing effect. Then add a reflective effect to the skin under the goggles.

Figure 08

9. Create speed effect

This is definitely not a matter of simply selecting a specific area and then applying motion blur. It needs to be considered in conjunction with the overall scene. The idea here is that the viewer moves as fast as the skateboard under the character’s feet, so as to design the speed effect.

Figure 09

10. Design background symbols

If you want to use symbols or signs to represent forward movement, the most intuitive and clear one is the arrow. The arrow represents the speed of the knight’s wind. Such a powerful logo will not be outdated even in the future! The jet effect of the hoverboard here is stylized rather than fully simulated. It would be more interesting to match the arrows in the background.

11. Add photo material

Sometimes adding pictures will further enhance the design effect. Here I chose a time-lapse photo of a car taillight flying past. Because the background is generally dark, I set the layer blending mode to brighten and then adjusted the color balance.

Figure 11

12. Adjust background transition

You can use a halftone pattern filter to add noise between the photo and the arrow to make the transition more natural, but you need to be careful not to create too much contrast. Because if the illustration needs to be printed, this is a problem. Then use the Glow Edge filter to adjust the halftone and set the layer blending mode to Soft Light.

13.Adjust facial design

Continue to adjust the character proportions and illumination. The Dodge and Burn tool can adjust the brightness of characters while maintaining detailed effects. Specifically use the Color Dodge mode to adjust the brightness. By adjusting the freckles and expressions on the face, the characters can be made alive as if they were living in the illustration.

14.Final adjustments

The design is almost complete. Check that the tones in the painting have been adjusted. In order to make the transition between the characters and the background smooth, some edge light effects are added here. Finally, merge the layers and use a Lens Correction filter to add edge color effects after applying Smart Sharpening.
