In post-photography, create black and white architectural photos with great video impact – landscape color grading

The tutorial explains in detail everything from the precautions in the early stage to the synthesis process in the later stage. In the later stage, it mainly explains the synthesis of HDR, wall processing, conversion to black and white photos, and replacement of the sky. Finally, it also explains how to add a copyright watermark.

Black and white is always a classic subject of photography. Whether it is a large and high-end photography organization like Magnum, or a simple enthusiast like us, many people like to shoot some things in black and white. Even if you don’t look black and white enough to make such a joke, it is enough to illustrate the charm of black and white photos! Architectural photography has also become an increasingly popular sector in recent years. With the development of technology and society, many distinctive architectural industries have emerged, which of course has also inspired many people’s passion for photography!

www.16xx8.com

Therefore, combining these two classic themes, black and white lightness architectural photography is also a popular category. Today I will make a simple and crude lightness architectural photography tutorial for beginners! I hope you’ll forgive me for being a fool of myself in front of all the masters. After all, this is just my first time trying this style. I have completely figured out a method suitable for novices to get started quickly. So, I will show off my shame next!

1. Precautions

First of all, since this is a tutorial from pre-production to post-production, of course we have to start with pre-production shooting! You can see in the previous screenshot that the poster is using a Canon EOS 6D camera with a Tamron 15-30mm lens. Of course, this is not an advertisement. (Some people have to say, Canon shoots a rough landscape, do you have the sharpness? Do you have the tolerance? I still firmly believe in that sentence, any camera and any equipment can shoot, but the choices are relatively different, no matter It doesn’t matter if you are Canon, Nikon, Soda, Pantene, Bah, Pentax, or even a small mirrorless camera or a small card.) Of course, in fact, when I wrote about the early stage, I was quite imaginary. After all, I was in the early stage. It was not done well. For the early stage of a group of brightness buildings, of course, the more equipment the better, but… I went to take photos of girls that day, so in the end I didn’t bring a tripod or a filter. I didn’t have a lens, and I didn’t bring a shutter release cable… I accidentally walked to Raffles City in Chengdu and took the photo on a whim. However, due to insufficient preparation, I had to do it with iron hands! Handheld all the way! About the early stage! When making a picture like this, you must first have materials! (Nonsense) My materials are as follows:

www.16xx8.com_05345RQ6-1.jpg

When I was not prepared enough, I could only choose to hold it handheld, and in order to ensure a certain shutter speed so that the film would not be blurry, I opened it at the highest setting! big! Light! lock up!

www.16xx8.com_05345RJ8-2.png? 555x737_130

Of course, this is definitely not advisable. Although I am still very relieved about the quality of 1530, it is a special situation after all! But what should you do if you are well prepared? First, put it on the shelf. Use an aperture of 8-16, a shutter speed as slow as possible, and bracket the exposure to obtain three pieces of material with different exposure parameters. The purpose of putting it on the shelf is to prevent your hand from shaking and possible displacement during bracketing exposure (although PS is compatible with It can be corrected for HDR but the accuracy is not very high. Unless you have a hand like me that can shoot water for two seconds, please put it on the shelf to avoid trouble). Of course, I will definitely not say a fixed parameter. Everything is determined by the environment at the time. Your bracketing exposure can be ±N stops, depending on the environment. The original poster here chose ±1 stop. Second, the shutter cable is also to prevent users from shaking hands (I’m talking about you, you Parkinson’s patients, if you don’t have iron hands, just put a shutter cable on it!), if possible, please turn on the reflector pre-up (ok, these It’s all common sense) Third, filter, this can actually be ignored, mainly because in an environment with obvious flowing clouds, using a light-reducing filter for long exposure can produce powerful effects and save some troubles in post-production. Of course, it is completely unnecessary. . This time I chose to use these three:

www.16xx8.com_05345U034-3.jpg

Special reminder: 1. Time is a very important thing. Try to choose the range between 8-10 am or 16-18 pm in the evening. Different regions may have different conditions, so again, it depends on the situation! Because no matter which direction you face at this time, even if there is direct sunlight, there will not be a particularly large light ratio, which is especially important! Of course, the mud pit and the big cable can forcefully eat up the tolerance. I am saying this to the scumbag users. 2. Don’t overexpose! Don’t overexpose! Don’t overexpose! Say important things three times! Regardless of whether it is your original image or the image with exposure compensation added in the exposure bracketing (of course, at this time, bad users have an advantage, 6D overexposure of 2EV can still be pulled back, personal test), but in order to avoid…It’s better not to bother and ensure the picture quality!

2. Import PS and synthesize HDR

The author here is using the version of Photoshop CC2015. Theoretically speaking, I think versions above CS5 are not much different for daily use. However, the current mainstream ones are still PS CS6 and PS CC.

www.16xx8.com_05345U1F-4.jpg

Okay, let’s open PS first (wow, what a refreshing interface, haha), and then determine the materials we want to use, which are the three we just mentioned.

www.16xx8.com_05345R4K-5.jpg

This is a set of photos using bracketed exposure. When shooting, I used Av mode and aperture priority mode, so I originally added a stop of exposure compensation, so the final photos were +1, 0, and +2. , then we need to import it into PS. Remember, don’t drag directly. PS has the function to do this. It would be too troublesome to drag you directly to combine!

After opening PS, we found on the startup interface, File->Automatic->Merge to HDR PRO, as shown below

www.16xx8.com_05345V942-6.jpg

Then, find the pictures you need to synthesize in the directory of the pop-up menu window. If you bracket expose three pictures, it will be three pictures, five pictures will be five pictures, and 200 pictures will be 200 pictures. (If your computer is powerful enough, then you are happy. ).

www.16xx8.com_05345SY6-7.jpg

Click to browse and find the photo you want

www.16xx8.com_05345VJ9-8.jpg

After selecting, click OK, then

www.16xx8.com_05345S491-9.jpg

If you are confident enough in yourself, you can choose not to check this option, otherwise please check it, PS will automatically align your photos for you, and then click OK!

As shown in the picture, this is the operation interface of HDR PRO synthesis, where you can fine-tune the shadows, highlights and other details of the photo.

www.16xx8.com_05345TI0-10.jpg

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that in the tutorials of other masters, they often combine two photos, one high-key and one low-key, and then use Mask to combine the two layers in the later stage. I personally find it a little troublesome to erase the gradient using the gradient method, so just generate one image. If you don’t need other adjustments, click OK and wait for the image to be created.

www.16xx8.com_05345U328-11.jpg

This is the layer we get.

www.16xx8.com_05345Q0K-12.jpg

Compared with other tutorials on the Internet, there are a lot of various mask selections, especially after completing the brightness gradient and superimposing the sky material, you need to add more masks. This is actually a bit anti-human, so you can Another method is to make each value surface visible directly on the mask after selecting it, and let the sky be at the bottom.

3. Treat the wall

Okay, the front is actually a lot of nonsense, some very, very basic things, but since it is a tutorial for a novice, Bai Xiang, then every detail must be explained clearly. The real post-production starts from this floor! First, let’s start with the idea and watch the finished film again!

www.16xx8.com_05345UT6-13.jpg

Let’s compare it to the original film. Which places have been moved?

www.16xx8.com_05345S4D-14.jpg

Relatively speaking, the major changes are mainly to the branches in the first place. Mainly because I was standing on the ground and taking the photo from above, so there are many bugs. And the building in the second place is obviously redundant in the whole photo, so we changed it in the later stage. When the time comes to choose, get rid of it! Then, the sky in the three places, the layers and flowing clouds in the entire sky are obviously not as stunning as the whole sky, so this is also a good way to change the sky in the later stage!

We’ll talk about the operation later., now we have to deal with the wall, we first analyze the original picture.

www.16xx8.com_05345QE7-15.jpg

In this picture, there are five prominent walls. Why not six? Let me briefly explain the reason. The sixth surface in the circle is basically completely in shadow. If you make a separate selection of brightness gradient on it, In fact, the overall effect is not ideal, so we ignore this face and directly integrate it with 2, which also reduces the cutout steps. Then, create five duplicate layers based on the five walls, leaving the background layer unchanged for now.

www.16xx8.com_05345V947-16.jpg

Compared with the previous inefficient method of adding a mask and then erasing it bit by bit, this time we chose to use the pen tool to create a path, convert it into a selection, and then apply the mask, which is faster.

www.16xx8.com_05345RA1-17.jpg

When we use the pen tool to trace points, there are a few things that need to be emphasized. Note that it is particularly important and will directly affect the quality of the film! Number one: every corner! Yes every one! You need to mark the drawing points, no matter how small they are. If you ignore them directly, it will affect the look and feel of the entire wall. Therefore, pay attention to every corner and basically zoom in to about 400% to select!

www.16xx8.com_05345S157-18.jpg

Second: When you choose to draw points, the path drawn between the two points should be as close to the wall of the building as possible. It doesn’t matter even if you eat a little bit. This is to avoid unsightly appearance when the weather changes later. The white edge, so as shown in the picture, I don’t know if my machine or lens is not sharp enough or the magnification is too large. In short, at the intersection with the sky, there is almost a color gradient area between the pixels. Cut it off!

www.16xx8.com_05345T214-19.jpg

Third: When you choose to draw points on the edge of the picture, please be sure to put the points on the edge. Remember, the edge! The principle is the same as above to prevent white edges from appearing!

www.16xx8.com_05345V400-20.jpg

Next, select the path view in the right panel and we can see the path we just created.

www.16xx8.com_05345W456-21.jpg? 850x478_120

Right-click the working path, select, and create a selection.

www.16xx8.com_05345T1I-22.jpg? 850x478_120

In the pop-up option box, do not change any settings, as shown in the picture. If you are not like this, please change the feathering back to 0 and click OK.

www.16xx8.com_05345V934-23.jpg? 850x478_120

Then, we can get a selection of the wall in the picture. At this time, click the mask button below to create a mask.

www.16xx8.com_05345T434-24.jpg? 850x478_120

At this time, the content in the selection will appear on the mask, but the unselected area will not. We get a wall layer, and we can check it by turning off the background and the underlying layer visibility.

www.16xx8.com_05345T2A-25.jpg? 850x478_120

Then, refer to the above method in turn, and use the same technique to pull out the remaining walls. Be sure to pay attention to the tips! But, just to be lazy, I will post what I have done, as shown in the picture:

www.16xx8.com_05345R157-26.jpg? 850x478_120

4. Luminance mask

At this point we have obtained the five wall layers as shown in the picture, all of which are opened. That’s it, and then, the highlight of the focus – the luminance mask. We choose the largest piece of wall to demonstrate (there may be a lot of steps, so I will try to explain it in detail). This is the originally selected wall. Let’s analyze it first.

www.16xx8.com_05345W5W-27.jpg? 850x478_120

The light on the entire wall is relatively soft, but it does not reflect a strong contrast between light and dark. This is what we will do next.
First, select the layer and use curve filling to brighten the entire picture. The selection of curve points is also based on actual needs. The steps are as follows:

www.16xx8.com_05345Ta7-28.jpg? 850x478_120

Notice! ! Very! Very! ! Very! ! ! Important point! When you follow the above steps, you will brighten the entire screen!
Yes, that’s right, you can open a picture to see the entire picture, not a separate layer. At this time, you need to apply the fill layer only to this layer according to the method shown in steps 1-3 in the figure below. , the method is:
1. Select the fill layer;
2. Press and hold the Alt key on the keyboard (don’t ask me where I am, ask suicide), hold the mouse close to the target layer, and click the left button.
3. After success, as shown in 3, an underline will appear under the layer name and a symbol as shown in the box pointed by the 1 arrow will appear.

www.16xx8.com_05345S136-29.jpg? 850x478_120

Then, perform steps 4-6, select the fill layer, create a mask for the fill layer, select the mask, and use the gradient tool shown in 5 to draw a white to black gradient, size, direction, and effect on the mask. As long as you are happy, there are no fixed requirements. What you get is as shown in the picture above.

Then, still in the same way, do the brightness gradient processing on the other walls. Again, it depends on the situation. All gradient directions, angles, and the degree of brightening all depend on your own preferences. After doing it, The comparison is as follows:

www.16xx8.com_05345W052-30.jpg? 850x478_120

www.16xx8.com_05345VC2-31.jpg? 850x478_120

5. Convert black and white

Then, we have to do black and white processing and overall picture adjustment, as well as – change the sky. After all the brightness gradients are done, we can try to use the fill layer to convert it to black and white. Note: There is no need to match the layers here, it is the black and white processing that applies to the entire picture.

www.16xx8.com_05345UH1-32.jpg? 850x478_120

After the black and white processing was completed, we found that the entire picture was a bit gray because there were only brightened parts and insufficient shadow parts, so the contrast was not very strong. Therefore, execute the curve again to adjust the overall picture (the curve is still based on the effect of your own picture).

www.16xx8.com_05345Q294-33.jpg? 850x478_120

Basically, we are almost done here, and finally we will move on to the heaven-changing method.

6. Change the sky

What? You ask me what to do with the sky? Of course, add clouds! What? Where did the clouds come from? Shoot it yourself. If you don’t have good material, don’t you know how to use Baidu? (In order to avoid copyright issues, it is recommended to take pictures yourself!)

www.16xx8.com_05345QY0-34.jpg? 850x478_120

I chose this picture, you can choose another one.

www.16xx8.com_05345RA8-35.jpg? 850x478_120

Drag it in, adjust it to the appropriate size, and then blur it. Here we use radial blur.

www.16xx8.com_05345R027-36.jpg?850x475_120

www.16xx8.com_05345WK4-37.jpg? 850x478_120

What is used here is the radial direction of the zoom. However, I didn’t actually pull it well. The center point should be closer to the upper end of the building, which would be better. Anyway, it can be adjusted. Just watch it when you do it.

Then switch to black and white, open the effect and take a look. It seems that the clouds are slightly darker due to the adjustment of the overall curve. Let’s add another adjustment layer, so that it will look slightly better. In fact, it was not done when making curve 6. Adding clouds made the picture darker, so I added an adjustment later.

www.16xx8.com_05345V645-38.jpg? 850x478_120

www.16xx8.com_05345S154-39.jpg? 850x478_120

7. Finally add the copyright watermark

Finally, open all the layers to see the effect. Well, it’s not bad. Add your own LOGO and publish the picture!

www.16xx8.com_05345T5P-40.jpg

How about it? It’s very simple, isn’t it? Although the process is a bit cumbersome, practice makes perfect, and once you master it, you can easily complete the post-production modifications of brightness photography!

Then, we can get a selection of the wall in the picture. At this time, click the mask button below to create a mask.

At this time, the content in the selection will appear on the mask, but the unselected area will not. We get a wall layer, and we can check it by turning off the background and the underlying layer visibility.

Then, refer to the above method in turn, and use the same technique to pull out the remaining walls. Be sure to pay attention to the tips! But, just to be lazy, I will post what I have done, as shown in the picture:

4. Luminance mask

We have now got the five wall layers as shown in the picture. This is what it looks like after opening them all. Then, the next step is the key point – the brightness mask.

1. Select the fill layer;

Black and white processingAfter finishing it, we found that the whole picture was a bit gray, because only the brightened part and the shadow part were insufficient, and the contrast was not very strong. Therefore, execute the curve again to adjust the overall picture (the curve is still based on the effect of your own picture).

I chose this picture, you can choose another one.

www.16xx8.com_05345RA8-35.jpg? 850x478_120

Drag it in, adjust it to the appropriate size, and then blur it. Here we use radial blur.

www.16xx8.com_05345WK4-37.jpg?

7. Finally add the copyright watermark

Finally, open all the layers to see the effect. Well, it’s not bad. Add your own LOGO and publish the picture!

How about it? It’s very simple, isn’t it? Although the process is a bit cumbersome, practice makes perfect, and once you master it, you can easily complete the post-production modifications of brightness photography!
