Use LR to adjust the film-like colors, and then make the color correction steps into presets. You can easily create such film-like photos in batches.
Recently, photographer JP Danko wrote a tutorial to teach you the simplest way to create a cinematic tone on LR. He said that there are some commonly used tones in the film industry. The most common ones are that the shadows of the picture are cyan or green. The highlights tend to be warmer, and the same color can be achieved with PS, but with LR you can save settings, batch adjustments and fine-tuning, basically “once and for all”, which is very convenient.
1. Observe the original film and adjust the basic parameters
First, observe the original film and find that the highlights and shadows are either too exposed or too dark, so improvements need to be made.
The main function of this step is to make up for the deficiencies in the early shooting, such as highlight restoration, fill light in the dark areas, and slightly modify the picture to increase saturation or contrast.
2. Adjust warm and cold color temperatures
According to the characteristics of the movie screen, we need to make appropriate adjustments to the color temperature of the photo. The general direction is: the bright parts are more orange-yellow, and the dark parts are more blue-green.
3. Adjust the picture tone
After that, find the “HSL/Color/Black and White” column, click “Color” in the middle to see the following interface, adjust the screen color, the saturation of blue can be increased, and you can make modifications according to personal preferences.
4. Adjust the curve
We have said before when analyzing the original film that we should try not to make the picture appear in a large area of dead darkness or 400, and try to balance the picture as much as possible by pulling the curve.
5. Improve details
In the operation bar on the right, we can see the details options, increase sharpness, reduce noise, and make the model’s skin smoother (similar to a simple skin grinding effect). If you don’t like this texture, you can skip it completely.
6. Add special effects
To make ordinary photos more cinematic, we can add some special effects, such as vignetting.
7. Add preset
This is the most critical step. The reason why LR is more convenient than PS is that it can easily create presets and easily implement batch editing. After we complete a certain representative work. You can save the entire process as a preset and then use it for other photo processing with just fine-tuning. You can select “+” to add a new preset to Lightroom, or click the lower left button to copy the settings to other photos.
Add a new preset or copy settings.
You’re done! This is the final result after our processing. Seemingly simple steps can make a qualitative change in the photo. Doesn’t it feel very fulfilling? Importantly, we saved the presets and can use them in batch post-production on other photos.
