The main focus of this tutorial is not to use the smoke brush. The seemingly simple effect is quite complicated to produce. First of all, the post-processing of smoke is relatively cumbersome, and it is necessary to process smoke with different directions into the same direction to expand the effect. The tiger head part is also more difficult to process. You need to use a highlight or smoke brush to create the shape of the tiger head according to its structure. Since this is a translation tutorial, many materials need to be downloaded online by yourself.
Final effect
1. Create a new file in Photoshop. I’m using a screen resolution of 1920 × 1200 and filling the canvas with gray (#b8b8b8).
2. Create a new layer and fill it with black. Make sure the foreground and background colors are white and black respectively, go to Filter > Render > Clouds. My goal was to turn these clouds into a nice linear effect. So go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur, Distance 999px, Angle 0. Set the layer to Multiply and Opacity 60%.
3. Download a vegetable texture and paste it onto the canvas. Lower the Opacity to 35%.
4. You can see that the area on the left is darker than the area on the right. So use the Burn Tool (O) to paint around the edges of the right area to make the texture more even.
5. Finally create a new layer and use a black soft brush (hardness 0%) to paint on the edge of the canvas. Lower the opacity to about 15%. We will place the text in the center. To make the edges darker, we’re going to move everyone’s attention to the center of the canvas.
6. The background is still flat. Let’s add 3 adjustment layers to it. Start with a black/white gradient (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map), set to Overlay and Opacity 70%.
7. Next, add a brightness/contrast layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast), and set the brightness to -18 and the contrast to +80.
8. Finally add another gradient layer, this time using dark blue (#082a75) and orange (#ffba00). Set to Overlay, Opacity 40%.
9. Now it’s time to create the font, starting by adding the PSDTUTS logo. Create the first shape using the Rectangle Tool (U), then press Cmd/Ctrl + J to duplicate it, and rotate it 90 degrees (press Cmd/Ctrl + T to activate the Transform Tool to rotate).
10. Create a new layer, use cracked edges brushes, and paint on the edges of the “+”. We’ll use these brushes to add a splatter effect to the letters. Don’t worry about the color, we’ll modify it later using the blending options.

11. Select the three “plus” layers (two rectangles and a stain brush) and press CMD / Ctrl + Alt + E to merge them into a new layer. Now, hide these three original layers and from now on we will only use this merged layer.
Right-click on the merged layer and select Blending Options. Start by adding a red (#630707) color overlay.
12. Next, add inner shadow to create a concave effect. These values depend on the dimensions of the rectangle, so if you’re not happy with the result, you can try adjusting the distance, size, and opacity values.
13. Finally add a white shadow and set it to “Linear Dodge” to complete the effect:
14. Now we are going to add a metallic scratch effect background to the text. Download Scratched metallic textures from WeGraphics. Put the texture on the painting, adjust it (Cmd/Ctrl + T), and set the blending mode to Overlay. This effect will only be applied on the “plus”, so move the texture to get the effect in that area you want.

15. With the texture layer still selected, press Cmd/Ctrl and click the “+” layer, and then click the “Add Layer Mask” button at the bottom of the layer panel. This way the scratch effect is only reflected on the plus image. Lower the Opacity to 60%.
16. I think combining white and black scratches will give a more realistic effect. So, duplicate the texture and delete the layer mask. Move the texture so that the white scratches don’t overlap the black. Press Cmd/Ctrl +I to invert the color of the texture and set the blending mode to Screen. This way we will only keep the white areas. Finally apply the mask again.
If you set the opacity to 100%, you can see a small problem: white scratches on the upper part of the inner shadow. Don’t worry, we will fix it in the next step.
17. In order to move the white scratches under the inner shadow, we need to put each style on a separate layer. Right-click on the style (in the Layers window) and select Create Layer.
18. At this point, just place the white scratch between the inner shadow and the color fill layer. Reduce the opacity by about 30% and see the effect again 🙂
19. In this step, we need to apply the same method to “plus” to the text “TUTPLUS” (the font used is Editys). Use brushes and textures to get grungy text effects.
20. In my opinion, the atmosphere is too dark. So create a new group and set the blending mode to Color Dodge. Create a layer in the group and use a large white soft round brush and click in the center of the canvas. Lower the opacity to around 45%. Fonts are now more vivid.
21. Create a new layer, set the foreground color to red, use a brush from Toxic Paint brushes, and click on the canvas. Then paint with your favorite brush. I placed it on top of the canvas so it’s not completely visible.

22. If you look at the Pandorum poster (not provided), you’ll notice a subtle floor effect beneath the text and metal surface. I want to reproduce the same effect. To do this, select all the previously created layers and merge them into a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + E) and name it “merged”. Hide other layers. Next we will use only the merged layers.
Download the image Chateau Noisy and place it below the other layers in your Photoshop document. Now select the “Merge” layer and add a layer mask. Using a large soft black brush, gently erase the bottom area to reveal some details of the floor.
23. From the background folder, find the gradient map (blue/orange), hold down the Alt key and drag it above the floor. This way, we duplicated the gradient layer and moved it to the floor.
24. The background is complete, and we can focus on the characters and lighting effects. The first thing to do is to extract the boy from the background and paste it onto the canvas.
Next duplicate the boy layer and set the duplicate layer to Overlay (70% opacity); duplicate it again and this time use the Smart Sharpen filter (Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen) to create the stain effect to enhance details. Finally duplicate it again and apply the High Channel Preserve filter (Filter > Other > High Channel Preserve) with the layer set to Overlay.
25. Use the Burn Tool (O) to darken the left area of the young man. Because from boysThe hands will emit light effects, so his back needs to be darker.
26. The characters are too saturated. Merge all layers of the selected youth into a new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + E). Press CMD/Ctrl + U keys to open the Hue/Saturation window and lower the saturation to -30.
27. It’s time to add some details to the youth. Create a new layer, enlarge the eyes and use a white brush to paint the pupils.
28. Another cool detail is that we have to create scars for him. Use the Brush Tool to paint on the boy’s shoulders. Select a dark red round brush (about 5px). If you have a tablet, open the brush window (Window > Brushes) and check the “Shape Dynamic” option. The thickness of the brush depends on the pressure of the pen.
29. Create a new layer and place it below the red scar. Still using the brush, now set white as the foreground color, paint on the edges of the scar. Make it look more real.
30. Now, let’s create the light effect. Create a new group and name it “Light Effects”. Create a new layer in the group and use Smoke brushes. Light rises from the hand. Select a brush and click on the canvas.
Brush download address:

31. Try to imagine how to make the smoke effect match the young man’s movements. Adjust it, rotate it, clear it, and try to add another puff of smoke.
32. Use the Eraser Tool (E) or a layer mask to remove the smoke in some areas.
33. You can see that the smoke effect is not monochromatic. Because I applied a gradient overlay from light blue (#cffeff) to light yellow (#fffeeb).
34. Use the same method as step 20 to create a second ray trace.
35. To create the tiger’s face, we need a reference image. Download this tiger and open the image in Photoshop. Using the Pen Tool or Lasso Tool, roughly extract the tiger’s head and drag it onto the main canvas. Place it where you want to achieve the light effect.
Decolorize the image (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + U) and reduce the opacity to help us create the key lighting effect.
36. The effect may be cool, but the process of creating a tiger’s face is not that exciting. Create a new layer and click once with the smoke brush.
37. Observe the shape of the smoke. Looking for smoke shapes that might correspond to the tiger’s face, I found parts of the smoke that looked like tiger teeth.
38. Move it to the appropriate position.
39. Finally, use the eraser tool to remove excess smoke.
40. In fact, the whole process is the same. You must grasp the small details very well and be patient.
41. Now hide the tiger layer. You can move the smoke brush as you like to achieve the desired effect. It is no longer necessary to accurately reproduce the outline of the tiger in the photo.
42. You may have noticed that this technique is very simple and easy to use. You can try using different brushes and add more details. You can also use different colorsAchieve different results. All you need is patience, the process is easy but the progress is slow. An hour later, I had this effect.
43. The work is almost complete, but there are still some things we can do. Create a new group and set the blending mode to Color Dodge. We will use this layer group to add the final points of light to the composition. Create a layer inside the group and use a large white soft brush to apply the light spot effect.
