Photoshop creates very shabby old photos – nostalgic style

Author: Angel.z Source:

This tutorial introduces how to make a shabby photo that is a bit yellowish. It is roughly divided into 3 major steps to complete. The first step is to adjust the color to a rough yellowish brown color. Then add the decadent texture. This step can be done by overlaying some texture materials. The last step is to create the missing parts of the corners, which needs to be completed using masks and some simple layer styles. The author introduces every step in great detail and is worth learning.

1. Open the original image in Photoshop and execute: Filter > Blur > Surface Blur. Choose Image > Adjustments > Gradient Map.

2. Execute: Image > Adjustments > Levels.

3. Execute: Image > Adjustment > Curves.

4. Execute: Image > Adjustments > Photo Filters.

5. Find the center of the image, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create a circular selection, and execute: Select > Modify Feathering Options (80-100).

6. Select > Invert, select Filter > Blur > Lens Blur.

7. Select Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

8. Duplicate the background layer and apply a grain filter to it (Filter > Texture > Grain).

9. Apply the Overlay blending mode with an opacity of 50%.

10. Find a scratched texture.

11. Select Image > Adjustments > Levels and move the middle mark a little to the right.

12. Apply the Soft Light blending mode to this layer with an opacity of 80%.

13. Merge these two layers and add inner glow effect to the layer.

14. Place two old paper texture layers below the layers. The dark paper should be placed at the bottom (see the picture below for location).

15. Add a layer mask to the picture layer and the bright paper texture layer, and use a round brush to create jagged edges on the layer mask. Apply a shadow layer style effect on the bright paper texture layer (can’t figure it out? Think about it).
