Unlike the previously existing curve or brightness contrast adjustment tools, this feature is a new tool in Photoshop CS3. This means you have more precise control over different color areas. In the default settings, you can see that the brightness ratios of different color channels are red 40%, yellows 60%, greens 40%, cyans 60%, blues 20%, and magentas 80%. We press the auto button on the right to adapt the brightness of different color channels according to the image, as shown in Figure 4. At this time, you can see that the brightness of the six color channels has changed.

If you are a beginner, it is ok to use auto. If you want to further adjust the photos according to your own needs, then you always need to use Use the mouse to select the area you want to adjust. At this time, the color channel to which this area belongs will be reflected in the black & white dialog box, see Figure 5.

In the automatic mode, I think the background of the picture is a bit dark. Click the background (the position of the red circle) with the mouse and it will be automatically selected in the black & white panel. We can see that magentas is selected because the original picture is The background is magenta, see Figure 1. Then we adjust the brightness of the magentas channel to 105, as shown in Figure 6. At this time, the gap between the image and the background has been widened, but you will still find that the four corners of the image are too dark. We use the same method to absorb the other Color, then find the reds channel and set the brightness to 50, see Figure 7

In the past, we might use the color mode or other modes in the layer to add tones to the photo, but the black& white tool has its own color adjustment function. Let’s look at Figure 10 below. We can see that there is a tint option. Check this and you can change the hue of the photo, as well as the chroma of the hue. Here we set saturation to 8 and hue to 47. At this time we can see that the photo has a nostalgic feeling.

If you have a large number of similar photos to process, you can save your settings, press the symbol to the right of preset, select savePreset (see Figure 11), and name it, I named it old.
