Today, I want to introduce to you a very useful method, which is to use Quick Mask to draw a selection. (Please note: What we are learning here is “quick” masking, which is a relatively simple mask. In the future, we will also learn about formal masks, namely “layer masks”.)
Previous , we use the marquee tool or the lasso tool to circle the picture we want to keep, that is, draw a selection; or we can determine the picture we want by adding and subtracting the selection, and finally remove the parts we don’t want by inverting the selection. Clear it out.
Now let’s look at the picture above picture. Its border is messy, and it looks like it has been painted with a very rough brush. The areas touched by the brush are shown, and the areas not touched by the brush are white. This look is often used in artistic images.
However, for such a selection, the Elliptical Marquee Tool will definitely not work. If you use the Lasso Tool to trace it carefully, it will be difficult to achieve the effect of a brush. It turns out that it was created using a masking method.
Today we will learn this method. Just understand it as you go.
1. Open a photo and enlarge the photo to the optimal size to facilitate our work.
2. In order to make it easier for everyone to understand, let’s do an experiment first. You can first use the Elliptical Marquee Tool or the Lasso Tool to draw a selection on the image.
3. Click “Edit in Quick Mask Mode” in the toolbar.
Now there is a large area on the screen Translucent red frosted glass.
Pay attention to the layers panel, here There is no added layer. This red thing is the quick mask. There is no red in the picture within the selected area, only red outside the selected area. Which brings us to:This is another representation of a constituency. Everything we want is total transparency and no changes. Everything we don’t want is covered up with a red mask. Then, as long as we change the size, shape or edge of the red area, it is equivalent to changing the size, shape or edge of the selection. So: The mask is the selection, but in a different form. This is the first thing we have to understand.
4. It is difficult to change the edges of the selected area. You have to use the lasso tool to draw the edges carefully, and the mask is much more convenient. We can paint with a brush. Click the brush tool, set the foreground color to white (why you should choose white will be discussed below, this is very important), select the opacity to 100%, and then go to the drop-down menu after “Brush” in the property bar above In the triangle menu, find “63” which is a large oil pastel brush.
(63 refers to its thickness, You can change it arbitrarily, and you can also choose another brush.) Now use this brush to draw on the screen and expand the ellipse just now. We see that the brush erases the mask like an eraser.
This is precisely because we just chose It’s white. This creates the constituencies we need.
If you think the selection is too big and want to make it smaller, then change the foreground color to black and paint again. What is now drawn is a red translucent mask. This is also the advantage of the mask. It can be modified at will, which is much more convenient than drawing a selection with the lasso tool. Here, we discovered something: you cannot draw colors on the mask. (Because this is just a selection, not a drawing). Use white to draw the transparent part, which is the part we want. Painting in black is a translucent red mask, which we don’t want. If you paint in gray, it’s feathering. If you paint with dark red, it will automatically turn into dark gray. If you paint it with a light red, it will turn into a light gray. Here, the most important thing to remember is:White is what we choose, black is what we don’t want. Never get this wrong. And it will be used in future channel learning. (You can also use an eraser. The eraser is the opposite of the brush. A black eraser is equal to a white brush.)
5. When you are satisfied, click “Quick Mask Mode” Click the “Edit in standard mode” button to the left of “Edit”. The mask becomes a selection. The next thing will be easier to handle, reverse the election and clear it. Same as before. If you are using it to combine it with other images, you should “duplicate the layer” at the beginning, so that the cleared part is completely transparent.
Okay, masking is not so mysterious, right? In the future, when you make a selection, you don’t have to draw an ellipse first. After opening the photo, go directly to the mask mode, use a black brush to paint out the unwanted parts, then use a white brush to make changes, and then switch back to the standard mode. , the constituency is there. Or open the photo, enter mask mode, and give the entire photoFill the image with black so that the entire image is translucent red. Then use a white paintbrush to draw the parts you want to keep. This method is also very effective for cutting out images.
Review questions:
1. What color brush can be used to remove the mask? What color brush can be used to add a mask?
2. Why can’t I draw colors on the mask?
3. If I want to draw a feathered area on the mask, what color brush should I use?
