Effect

This tutorial will describe how to create a fairy tale-like dream scene of cobblestone ground, grassy roads, wooden bridges, and thatched houses from scratch in Photoshop. Use your imagination to create your own personalized desktop wallpaper.

Final effect preview

Create a new file with a width of 1200px and a height of 800px. Create a gradient fill from top to bottom (#CCCCCC to #FFFFFF) as the background image.

Select the pen tool, set it to “Shape Layer” mode in the top menu bar (leftmost button), draw a simple sandbar shape, and fill it with any color.

Repeat the same steps to create more sandbar shapes as shown below. The positioning of each shape is entirely based on your preference, there are no uniform rules.

Now find a beach texture you like. Of course, you can also use the one in this article. Click to download
Place the downloaded texture into the stage, making sure the texture covers the entire sandbank. Right-click the sandbar layer to load the selection, then click the Vector Mask button to create a mask. In this way, we get a beach texture in the shape of a sandbank, and we can hide the originally drawn sandbank layer.

We use the same approach for the grass texture. You can also click to download the texture used in this article. Select the grass layer and perform “Filter – Sharpen – Sharpen” to brighten the details.

Select the brush tool, open the brush settings panel, find the brush named “Chalk 60”, and set the foreground color to #000000. Now click on the mask thumbnail on the right side of the grass layer thumbnail and draw along the edge of the sandbar to expose the underlying beach. The edges are not too regular and look more natural. Remember that the black part is used to show the underlying beach. If you want to reduce the beach area, you can use a white brush to cover it up.

After the edges are processed, add a projection effect to the grass layer with a projection angle of 90°. Now that we have a rough effect, let’s move on to the beach texture.

Create a new layer between the beach and grass layers, rename it “Tones”, and set the layer blending mode to “Soft Light”. Select the brush tool, set the foreground color to #00000, and the brush radius to 100px. Use a soft-angled brush to draw the shadow along the edge of the sandbar. The effect is as shown below:

Repeat the above process several times to simulate the light source effect in the upper left corner.

Select the beach shape first drawn with the pencil tool, unhide it, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+N to create a new blank layer, then select the blank space and the beach shape layer, and Ctrl+E to flatten the layers. Execute “Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur”, set the blur radius to 5px, and set the layer opacity to 40%. Execute “Edit-Free Transform-Proportion”, reduce the vertical proportion as shown in the figure below, and click Enter to complete the transformation.

Now that we have the basic outline of the projection, we still need to enhance the details. For example, the projection color of the lower edge of the sandbar close to the ground needs to be deepened.

Zoom in the canvas for a clearer perspective. Use a small diameter black brush to paint the contact area between the sandbank and the ground, deepening the shadow.

Use the same method to complete the shapes of the other sandbanks.

Below we fill the sandbar with vegetation, and the elements needed to create a dreamy atmosphere depend on your imagination.
You can find the materials needed for this article at click here. These high-quality elements can help you create a dreamy atmosphere.

Let’s add trees and crops.

Create a new layer below all the sandbank embellishment layers, set the foreground color to black, and select a soft-angled brush to draw the shadows of the vegetation.

This is the effect after filling in vegetation, flowers, and trees. Remember to reserve a spot for the house.

Finally, we continued to add some fairy-tale elements, such as shoe-shaped houses and walking trees.
