In this Photoshop example tutorial, we will learn how to use the Pen Tool and Gradient Effect To simulate the effect of flames, draw a beautiful flame fish.
Step 1
Create a new document. I use 800*600 pixels. This is a good working environment for creating icons.
Step 2
Use the pen tool to draw a basic shape of the fish body. You can draw any fish you like.
Step 3
Open the layer style and use a yellow-orange-red gradient to create a flame effect. Set the gradient style to mirror and the angle to 45°.
Step 4
The shape of the fish you have made so far should look something like this (if you followed the steps I did).
Step 5
Now we are going to make the eyes of the fish.
Select the Ellipse tool to draw a perfect circle. Hold down shift to draw a perfect circle.
Open the layer style and apply this style (see the picture below)
Step 6
Create another shape on the perfect circle and add some outer glow.
Step 7
Make a flame shape. This will add a nice fire effect to the fish’s eyes. Open the layer style and apply Outer Glow.
Step 8
Now we’re going to use the Pen Tool to set the fire effect on the fish’s body (I know, this is a funny thing to say).
Draw a long pointed shape. Apply a layer mask and use the gradient tool to fade it.
Step 9
Repeat step 8 a total of 18 times (it’s up to you, no one cares if you do it 100 times:)), using different shapes and colors.
Step 10
Now place each shape in the folder you created and name it “Fireshapes”. Now copy the entire folder, press CTRL/CMD + E to merge the folders into one layer. Rename the layer “Fireshapes2” and press CTRL/CMD + T to place the selection at the bottom.
Now put it on the fish.
Step 11
Repeat step 10, rename this layer to “Fireshapes3” and place it above “Fireshapes2”. Now let’s use the Pencil Tool to add a yellow shape at the bottom to make it look more like a fish.
Step 12
Now we will complete the next step using the layer style options.
Step 13
Now you have a general idea of how to use the Pen Tool to create fish shapes. I will add some gradient shapes to the tail of the fish (set the gradient as in step 12), place them in a folder and name it “Tall”.
The tail is the area within the blue path.
Step 14
Now add a layer mask to the tail folder and apply a gradient to make it fade, thus achieving this effect within the blue path.
Step 15
This is what we have accomplished so far.
Step 16
Now we are going to make the fins. Fish can’t swim without fins, right? Make a shape based on the picture above (the color I used is #fcb100), and use the layer mask and gradient tool to make it fade.
Step 17
Now let’s add some flame shapes to the fins using the same technique as in step 16.
Step 18
Create a shape on the head of the fish. This will add a nice fire effect.
Step 19
Repeat step 18 and use the layer mask and gradient tool to fade it (that is, the gradient effect).
Step 20
Now put everything we have done into a folder and name it “Fish”.
Step 21
Set the opacity of the fish folder to 69%
Step 22
To copy the fish folder, press CTRL/CMD + E. This will make the duplicate layer above the fish folder. Add styles above.
Step 23
This is the effect so far.
Step 24
Now we are going to apply the smoke effect and some star brushes. Copy and paste the smoke above the fish, draw some stars on the same layer, and set the layer’s opacity.Set the height to 69% and add a layer style.
Step 25
Now paste the globe icon and add a layer mask. Choose a suitably sized brush and set the Hardness to 0. Use this large brush to fade the globe icon and paint on the layer mask using the color #000000.
Step 26
Now place the earth icon behind the fire fish.
Step 27
Press CTRL/CMD + T and hold down the shift key to resize the earth until it matches the size of the fire fish.
Step 28
Now we start making the background.
Let’s choose a background color. I use #112047.
Step 29
This is the effect of using the background color.
Step 30
Create a new layer above the background, behind the earth and fire fish. Use the selection tool to mark a third of your document. Fill it with a darker color (#0e1939).
Step 31
Apply a layer mask and select the Gradient Fill Tool to fade it. (As shown above)
Step 32
Use the Ellipse Tool to draw an oval. Place it under the fire fish. This will be the shadow of the fire fish.
Step 33
Now go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and apply these settings (you need to do this twice, once along the x-axis and once along the y-axis).
Step 34
Now use the Line Tool to draw a straight line above the globe, turn on layer styles, and apply some Bevel and Emboss (I will let you choose the settings you want to apply at this point).
Step 35
Repeat step 34, this is what we have now.
Step 36
Create a new layer and use a star brush to paint some stars. This will make the “sky” look more realistic. Finish.
