Restoration techniques, eight useful techniques for rescuing scrap films – Techniques Tutorial

Share eight simple techniques for repairing scrapped images, namely secondary composition, direct color filling, chaotic color temperature, black and white contrast, histogram, rejection of flesh, over-sharpening, and local sharpening.

Every time I check the photos on the computer after taking them, I find that many of them have problems, such as poor composition, underexposure or overexposure, blurred images, etc. It feels a pity to delete these photos, but I don’t have time to make fine adjustments. What should I do? Below, Lao Lang will introduce to you some simple and crude methods, which are very effective when dealing with a large number of photos.

First and second composition, cut out good photos

Many people take photos and press the shutter faster than their brains can think. Many photos do not pay attention to the composition problem. Fortunately, digital cameras now have relatively large pixels, so we can easily compose the second shot through cropping. Using the cropping tool in Photoshop, the cropping box pulled out is a nine-square grid, which serves as a reference for our cropping. Nine-square grid composition form: Divide the picture into nine equal parts in the shape of a “well”. When cropping, place the theme scenery or characters that express the theme of the work at the intersection of the nine equal parts. The sky and the ground are best located in the upper and lower 1/3. Location.

After using the cropping tool, there are 8 control points around the cropping box. Using it, we can widen, raise, shrink and enlarge the box. If you put the mouse close to the corner of the cropping box, you can find that the mouse will turn into a two-way arrow with corners. At this time, we can rotate the cropping box by an angle. According to the composition principle of the rule of thirds, after marking the cropping area, double-click the mouse in the middle of the cropping box to achieve the second composition cropping.

2. To turn the gray sky into blue, fill in the color directly

Sometimes, the weather is obviously very good, but it is not blue enough, and the sky is even more pale when the film is taken under strong sunlight. If you want to use lightroom or camera raw to explain how to adjust it, it is a long story. It’s better to take a crude method and fill in colors directly. Although the medicine is very powerful, the effect lies in your own control. Open the picture you want to adjust and add a new layer in the layers panel. Then use the straight line selection tool box to select part of the sky, fill it with blue, and then set the layer mode to “Multiply” in the layer panel. According to the “Multiply” principle: when any color overlaps with black, Produces black, and any color that overlaps white remains unchanged. If the part of the sky you fill where it meets the ground is a light color, use a blue to white gradient when filling it.

If you feel that the color of the sky is too dark, you can reduce the transparency to 50% or less through the opacity setting in the layer panel, and finally use “Hue/Saturation” (menu: Image → Adjustments → Hue/Saturation) to do The overall color adjustment changes the sky. If there is water in the picture, attention should also be paid to unifying the tones of the water surface.

3. The confusing color temperature is a new trick

Even today’s high-end SLRs will misjudge in complex light environments. Usually, people often encounter night scenes when shooting. The color temperatures of various lights are mixed, and the color cast will be serious.

Left: Indoor red and yellow lights are interlaced, with red lights dominating, making the photo overall redder. Right: The effect of using “Auto Color” in Photoshop

Method: Use “Image→Adjustment→Auto Color” in Photoshop to change it easily. This function will change the white balance of the picture according to the relationship between the black, white and gray in the picture, and the correction accuracy can be up to 80%. Then use the curve adjustment tool to adjust the rest, such as changing the contrast and light-dark relationship. This adjustment method is useful in most situations. But there is one light source that can kill all digital cameras and is almost impossible to save, and that is the yellow light source.

Under yellow light sources, digital cameras basically lose their white balance correction function, and with this light source, there is no way to save it later. So try to stay away from such light sources when taking photos.

Photoshop provides a very useful photo filter, menu: “Image→Adjustment→Photo Filter”. When choosing the color of the filter, we can choose a cold color opposite to yellow, or try using the opposite filter. Although it cannot completely change the white balance effect of the picture, it can make the harsh yellow color well controlled.

4. Great contrast between black and white, easy to change to HDR

In an environment with strong light contrast, the light and dark of the captured picture form a strong contrast. To be conservative, smart photographers usually meter the highlights, middle colors, and dark parts separately, take one photo of each, and then combine them into a perfectly exposed HDR photo. It is too troublesome, so how to solve it later?

In an environment with a large contrast between light and dark, choosing mid-tone metering is a balanced choice.

In the menu: “Image→Adjustments→Shadows/Highlights”. According to the changes in the picture, adjust the sliders on the shadows and highlights at the same time and observe the changes in the photo until you are satisfied. Do you feel a bit like HDR photos now?

5. Exposure errors, histogram comes to the rescue

During shooting, there are many reasons why we may have incorrect exposure of the shot. The photos taken are either too bright, too dark, or too gray. For this type of photos, always use curve adjustment tools. It is recommended to use Photoshop CS3.0 or above. There is a histogram display in the adjustment window. For knowledge and understanding of histograms, please refer to relevant information. It is very necessary to study them carefully.

The histogram overflows to the left and is too dark. Move the adjustment point in the lower left corner upwards, adjust the adjustment point in the middle upwards, and observe the color changes in the picture until you are satisfied.

The histogram overflows to the right, which is too bright and overexposed. Move the adjustment point in the upper right corner downwards, adjust the adjustment point in the middle downwards, and observe the color changes in the picture until you are satisfied.

There is a section on both sides of the histogram with no pixels displayed, and both dark and bright parts are lacking. Move the adjustment points on both sides toward the middle. Adjust the middle adjustment point according to the color change of the picture until you are satisfied.

6. Reject meat slices, be clearer and clearer

The lack of clarity in photos is not only related to our shooting techniques, but also has a lot to do with the cameras and lenses we use. For example, the photos taken by the dog head are very “meaty” (a saying that the photos are soft and not sharp enough). Also, don’t pay attention to using the best aperture for imaging (between F5.6~F13). For those “meat slices” we still make it a little sharper to make it look more comfortable.

www.16xx8.com_0225534546-11.jpg

The original picture on the left seems very clear, but when you zoom in to 100%, it becomes uncomfortable. The picture is too soft. This is the obvious piece of meat, and it feels soft. Use Photoshop’s sharpening filter: “Filter → USM Sharpen”. Values such as the “amount” and “radius” of sharpening must be set according to the size and actual needs of the photo. Fixed parameters cannot be used mechanically. This kind of sharpening can make an “immediate” change to those slight blurs and lens-related problems.

7. Sharpen, don’t get addicted

When sharpening photos, you need to handle them carefully. If you sharpen them properly, the photos will have clear priorities and look very comfortable. If it is sharpened, the photo will be distorted, giving people a dry feeling and looking uncomfortable. So it’s okay to like sharpening, but don’t get addicted to it.

Let’s first take a look at several sharpening tools in Photoshop. Open a photo in Photoshop, and then click on the menu: “Filter → Sharpen”. We can see about 5 types of sharpening tools. Let’s choose 4 of the more representative ones to talk about their characteristics.

www.16xx8.com_022553F20-13.jpg

USM sharpening: This is Lao Lang’s favorite sharpening tool. This function has been available since Photoshop 6.0. The main advantage is that it is easy to control and the sharpening effect is natural. When using, do not overdo itAdjust the sharpening amount slider, and a certain halo effect will appear after excessive adjustment. Further sharpening: This is a relatively lazy operation mode, and it is easy to cause restlessness due to over-sharpening. It is generally not used by old wolves, unless you are doing some productions that require strong contrast effects, such as Outdoor poster. Edge sharpening: This is also a relatively easy-to-use sharpening tool. It mainly improves the contrast of the edges, which can make the outline of the photo clearer. Lao Lang usually uses it to sharpen some photos with clear outlines. . However, sometimes over-sharpening occurs, so be careful when using it. Smart sharpening: This is another lethal weapon that began to appear in Photoshop CS2. It includes three sharpening methods: “Gaussian mode”, “lens blur” and “dynamic mode”. Lao Lang made a comparison and found that the “lens blur” sharpening effect is the best. The other two are prone to distortion and are comparable to USM sharpening.

8. Sharpen and prioritize.

When sharpening a photo, the best way is to sharpen the key objects of the photo. For example, in the macro work below, when sharpening, we only partially sharpen the insects and stamens, so that the main object clearer.

www.16xx8.com_0225532055-14.jpg

The method of local sharpening is very simple. You can first copy the original photo in the layer panel, then click the mask setting in the layer panel, then set the foreground color in the tool panel to black, use the brush tool, and set Use a pen tip of a suitable size to achieve the effect, and then apply it to the areas that do not require sharpening. The areas that have been smeared will retain the original effect, and the areas that have not been smeared will have a sharpened effect.
