Use Photoshop custom brushes to skillfully draw realistic characters’ hair

Requirements: Have a relative understanding of photoshop and a certain grasp of color.

Steps: Drawing hair is a relatively tedious process. Here I introduce a relatively simple method of painting using Photoshop’s homemade brushes.

1. Press Ctrl N to create a new transparent image with a size of 20×20 pixels [The size of the image can be changed according to the drawing requirements. Use the magnification tool to maximize the image and select the brush tool – -The pen thickness is 1 pixel, and draw a few random dots on the canvas. Note: Try not to overlap between dots. As shown in the picture:

Then click the Edit menu bar, define the picture made above as a brush, and name it Brush 1.

Note: The brush 1 here is composed of 1-pixel points. You can also customize a 2-pixel brush as needed, and so on.

2. After making the brush, we can start drawing the character’s hair.

Create a new transparent picture of 500×400 pixels [the size can be customized]. Use the feather brush tool with a pen thickness of 65 pixels and a color of R98G69B12. Create a new layer and paint it randomly on the canvas. Pull out the lines. As shown in the picture:

3. Create a new layer, use custom brush 1, adjust the brush spacing to 1%, the color is R164G97B11, and then draw the following effect on the canvas. This process depends on everyone’s proficiency in using the mouse. As shown in the picture:

Then right-click the menu on this layer, select the blending option, and the layer style panel will pop up. The settings are as shown in the figure:

4. Create a new layer and make the palette color lighter, here it is R180G107B13. Repeat the third step and change the shadow transparency to 28%. It is OK. The effect is as shown in the figure:

5. Create a new layer, fill it with black, and place it at the bottom.

6. Create a new layer, use a 1-pixel brush, set the brush color to R204G123B18, and draw a few strokes on the canvas at will. As shown in the picture:

7. Create a new layer, double-click the layer to pop up the layer style panel, and change the layer transparency to 20%. Use a 65-pixel feathering brush with a black color, and click a few times on the areas where the hair needs to be darkened [This process must be controlled by yourself. As shown in the picture:

8. Create a new layer, change the layer transparency to 50%, and repeat step 7. As shown in the picture:

9. Merge all layers [Here you can save the file as another file first for backup.

10. Use the blur tool to properly blur the back of the hair close to the background.

11. Use the sharpening tool – a feathering effect with a pen thickness of 17, to sharpen a few hair strands at the front of the hair.Perform appropriate sharpening, and finally use the brush to add a few hair strands of other colors where needed.

In this way, the hair production is basically completed, and additional adjustments can be made as needed. The final effect is as shown below:
