This tutorial introduces how to make colored smoke. The whole production process is actually very simple. Just use the selection tool to make a local selection of fine smoke, then use a brush to apply a light color, and then superimpose the small smoke together to create the smoke effect. Finally, you can use gradient overlay to add the desired color. Since the selected areas of smoke are very small, you must be careful when marking the areas with a pen. It is difficult to control the color of colored smoke. It is best to start with the black and white effect in the early stage and then add color at the end.
Final effect
1. Create a new document of 600 * 800 pixels. The background fill color is #D7EBF5. The effect is as shown below.
2. Create a new layer, use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to pull out the elliptical selection shown in Figure 2, press Ctrl + Alt + D to feather 60 pixels and fill it with white. The effect is as shown in Figure 3.
3. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the main outline of the smoke, convert it to a selection and fill it with white, as shown below. Do not cancel the selection after filling it.
4. Create a new layer, press Ctrl + Alt + G to group it with the previous layer, then create a new layer below the current layer, fill the selection with black, and change the layer opacity to: 10%, the effect is as follows picture.
5. Create a new layer and set the foreground color to black. Bring up the selection of the main body of the smoke, select the brush tool, set the brush opacity to: 5%, and then paint the bottom edge slightly darker, as shown below.
6. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the path shown in Figure 7, convert it to a selection, feather it by 1 pixel and fill it with white. The effect is as shown in Figure 8.
7. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline a curved path, convert it to a selection and fill it with black, cancel the selection and add a layer mask, use a black brush to slightly paint the top with a transparent effect, as shown in Figure 10 .
8. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 11 and fill it with black. Change the layer opacity to: 20%. The effect is as shown in Figure 12. Keep the selection and create a new layer, select the menu: Edit > Stroke, set the value to 1, and set the color to black. After confirmation, change the layer opacity to: 20%, the effect is as shown in Figure 13.
9. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 14 and fill it with black. After canceling the selection, add a layer mask and use a black gradient to bring out the top transparency effect, as shown in Figure 15.
10. Create a new layer and use a black brush to paint the blurred curves shown in Figures 16-18 to enhance the layering of the smoke.
11. Create a new layer, bring up the subject outline selection, and use a black brush to paint the lower right corner a little darker. The effect is as shown below.
12. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 20, and use a black brush to paint the edge darker. The effect is as shown in Figure 21.
13. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 22, and use a black brush to paint the edges darker.
14. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 23, and use a black brush to paint the edge darker. The effect is as shown in Figure 24.
15. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 25, fill it with black, and change the layer opacity to: 10%, as shown in Figure 26. Keep the selection, create a new layer, and use a black brush to draw the edges Apply some parts darker, the effect is as shown in Figure 27.
16. Create a new layer, use a pen to outline the selection shown in Figure 28, fill it with black, and change the layer opacity to: 10%. Create a new layer, use a black brush to darken the edge of the selection, and the effect will be See Figure 29.
17. The smoke at the bottom is basically completed. The methods for making the smoke at the top and middle are exactly the same. The process is as shown in Figure 30 – 34. Pay attention to the hierarchical relationship.
18. Create a new layer, select the gradient tool, set the color as shown in Figure 35, pull out a linear gradient from top to bottom, and change the layer blending mode to “Color”, the effect is as shown in Figure 36.
